India, home to the world’s largest population of school-age children, is also the epicenter of a deepening learning crisis. While digital technologies are revolutionizing many sectors, education for the underserved remains riddled with inequity, outdated tools, and learning losses—especially since the COVID-19 pandemic. But there is hope, and it lies at the intersection of AI and grassroots innovation.
At Jyoti EdLab, the research and innovation initiative of Under The Tree Foundation, we are exploring how AI can serve as an equalizer—if it is deployed in a way that reflects India’s ground realities, resource limitations, and community-driven needs.
The Indian Learning Crisis: Stark and Systemic
The numbers are sobering. According to the Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) 2023, while school enrollment remains near universal, foundational learning is at a critical low:
- Only 43% of Class 3 students in rural India can read a Class 1-level text.
- Less than 20% of Class 3 children can do basic subtraction.
- Learning levels have dropped to pre-2012 levels in many states.
Post-pandemic, nearly 80% of parents reported that their children’s learning had been severely affected due to prolonged school closures. For families without access to smartphones, internet, or private tuition, this loss is not just academic—it’s lifelong.
India is not suffering from a lack of schooling—but a lack of meaningful learning.
A Glimmer of Hope: AI as a Bridge, Not a Barrier
Despite these challenges, AI offers a real opportunity to reimagine how we deliver learning—especially in low-resource settings.
AI-powered chatbots, voice assistants, and adaptive learning systems can help:
- Diagnose learning levels of individual children
- Personalize instruction to meet them where they are
- Provide on-demand tutoring, even outside school hours
But here’s the challenge: Millions of Indian children still lack access to smartphones, stable electricity, or data connectivity.
This is where grassroots nonprofits like Under The Tree step in—not just as users of AI, but as translators of technology into equity.
Local Innovation: Where High-Tech Meets Low-Tech
In rural Uttar Pradesh and slums of Noida, our team at Jyoti EdLab is experimenting with tools that combine offline functionality, AI-based diagnostics, and local-language learning content.
We are inspired by models like:
- Interactive Voice Response (IVR) learning platforms that deliver AI-generated lessons via basic phones—no smartphone or data required
- AI tutors for government school children, being piloted in states like Karnataka and Himachal Pradesh with support from NCERT and EdTech partners
- Personalized WhatsApp bots, already being tested to teach basic math and English in low-income communities
These models show that AI doesn’t need to be fancy to be effective—it just needs to be context-aware, language-inclusive, and device-agnostic.
The Role of Nonprofits: Beyond Technology
Nonprofits are uniquely positioned to bridge AI and the needs of real learners. We understand not just what children need, but also the constraints their families and schools face.
At Jyoti EdLab, our mission is to:
- Develop AI tools that work offline and in Indian languages
- Train local educators and volunteers to use AI in blended learning
- Create community-driven feedback loops to ensure tech solutions are aligned with real needs
- Build partnerships that respect ethics, inclusion, and sustainability
We are not chasing shiny tools—we are co-creating change with communities.
India’s Moment to Lead
India is poised to become a global leader in AI for social impact. With a rich ecosystem of EdTech innovators, a growing digital public infrastructure (like DIKSHA and Aadhaar), and a massive school-age population, we have both the need and the opportunity.
But this leadership must be inclusive.
If AI is to bridge gaps, not widen them, it must be:
- Built with local data
- Guided by real-life constraints
- Driven by equity, not efficiency
And nonprofits must lead this movement—not as afterthoughts, but as co-architects of the future of learning.
